In December 2014 the Quantified Self & Biohacking Finland community held the first Biohacker Summit at the Wanha Satama venue in Helsinki, and the program had me down for something conference schedules rarely list: surgery and installation of implants on two volunteers. The community's YouTube channel published the full thirty-six-minute session on March 14, 2015, the date my archive carries.
One of the two volunteers was Pekko Vehviläinen, a doctor of engineering known in the Finnish press as the most quantified man in Finland. The chip that went into his hand came from Dangerous Things, and it did not sit idle: that February, Finnish coverage reported him taking part in what was billed as the world's first money transfer from a mobile device to an implanted microchip.
