On May 21, 2015, Canadian television aired SHIFT, a biohacking documentary made for TELUS Optik TV by directors Steve Adams and Sean Horlor. The film splits the global biohacking movement into three streams (wearables, implantables, and superhuman exoskeletons) and follows Pacific Northwest people working in each. I carried the implantables segment.
The guide through all of it was futurist Nik Badminton, the same Nik Badminton I had chipped on stage in Vancouver the year before, so the two of us needed no introduction. Alongside my segment, the film features Jonathan Tippett and his Prosthesis anti-robot exoskeleton project, Sarah Goodman on wearables, and representatives from 23andMe.
SHIFT ran as season one, episode four, shot by cinematographer Bjorn Hermannes with music by Jeff Cancade. It also picked up a second life online: Adafruit's blog featured it in May 2016, and biohacking sites were still writing it up five years after it aired.
