On February 21, 2020, Freethink published "I Got a Chip Implanted in a Biohacking Garage" as part of its Biohackers series. I'm not in this one. That's why it's in the archive.
The premise: Freethink director Chase Pipkin decided to get an NFC chip implant himself. He did his research on the chip he got at dangerousthings.com, and there's a Dangerous Things image at the 1:43 mark. Jeffrey Tibbetts, a registered nurse and biohacker surgeon, performed the procedure in the garage that serves as his clinic. The resulting implant lets Chase unlock his house and car doors and control his lights.
When Good Morning America covered my implants in 2006, the count of voluntary implantees worldwide was about thirty. Fourteen years later, a video director could order a chip online, have a practiced hand install it, and file the story himself. No pioneer required. From where I sit, that is what progress looks like: coverage that no longer needs me in the frame, just the hardware working.
