For once, the talk in this archive is not mine. On September 13, 2024, at BSides RDU at the McKimmon Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, physical penetration specialist Deviant Ollam presented "All About Implantable RFID: Is Cyborgification Right for YOU?" Sixty-eight minutes of exactly what the title promises. He published the recording on his own channel that October.

Deviant carries implants of his own, and by his own account he started writing this talk back in 2018 "as a means to disambiguate all kinds of details for people who would ask me about the implants in my hands."

The talk is a crash course in how RFID works, how and why some credential systems fall to "hacker shenanigans like replaying or cloning" (his phrase), and which implants can pull off which tricks. It was not a sponsored talk, and he is upfront that "much of this talk consists of me telling the audience what they probably DON'T need to go out and buy!"

Our hardware gets a fair hearing along the way; his slide deck includes one titled "So Who or What is VivoKey?" and sections on the VivoKey Spark 2 and Apex implants. When someone this good at physical security gives an audience an honest tour of implants, caveats included, it does more for the field than any advertisement could.
