In the July 2016 issue of IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine (vol. 5, no. 3, pp. 103–106), Katina Michael published "RFID/NFC Implants for Bitcoin Transactions: An Interview with Amal Graafstra." Katina edited the proceedings of IEEE ISTAS 2010, the symposium in Wollongong, Australia that I keynoted, so this interview continued a conversation that had been running for years.

The subject was UKI (pronounced "yoo-kee"), the implantable NFC platform I was developing for identity, security, cryptography, and payment applications. We talked about the changes I had watched since the Maker Revolution, and about why the time had come to build products the general population could use, not just the tech community.

The core of the argument: your online identity is owned by companies, not by you. Anchor identity to an embedded implant instead, and control flips to the user; every transaction is yours to authorize. Bitcoin made the natural test case, being money secured by nothing but cryptographic keys, and keys are exactly what a subdermal secure element is built to hold.
