In the fall of 2015 I was back in Helsinki for the Biohacker Summit, the Finnish conference whose first edition, a year earlier, had me installing implants in volunteers on stage. From this trip, the footage that traveled came from Steve Cronin, who published an eleven-minute cut of my talk on defining biohacking on October 27, 2015.
Definitions matter more in this scene than people expect. "Biohacking" gets stretched over a lot of territory. The Finnish community alone runs from quantified-self data tracking to subdermal electronics, so pinning down what the word means was worth a talk of its own. I had some standing to attempt it: a decade of living with implants, and years of selling them to everyone else.
The Biohacker Summit went on to become Europe's top conference for this movement. In 2015 it was still young, and Helsinki was already pulling the whole spectrum of it into one room.
