On January 31, 2006, Discovery Channel Canada's Daily Planet ran a segment on my RFID implants, with host Jay Ingram. Daily Planet was the real thing as science television goes: a daily, prime-time science news show that began life as @discovery.ca in 1995, when it was the only hour-long daily science program in the world. Ingram fronted it from 1995 until 2011.
Timing-wise, this was the opening act of the 2006 wave. Jennifer had gotten her implant in December, the "RFID couple" story was just starting to move, and this segment aired before Reuters came through in February, before MSNBC, before CBC's The Hour, and well before Good Morning America in March. Canadian outlets in particular kept a steady interest going all year (CTV, CBC, Canada AM, OMNI, and ROBTv all followed), which made sense: Jennifer lived in Vancouver, BC, and half the story was on their side of the border.
Getting the first substantial TV treatment from a national science show, rather than a morning-couch curiosity slot, was a fine way to start the year.
